It pays the bills, though, it’s steady work, and I can do most of it on auto-pilot, like this re-hashed trend analysis. I remember my father joking about how little actual work was done in the cube farms, even 30 years ago when he was still working in the corporate world, back before his second stroke. He loved to complain about the fact that he spent more time in meetings and committees (and committee meetings and executive steering committees – he had a hundred variations) than actually getting anything done.
It was the outsourcing bubble at the turn of the century that really bothered him, though. That was in the last years before India realized it had, for all intents and purposes, the brain trust of the entire world within its borders, and stopped playing second fiddle.
