I swing myself around in time to see him run into my office and start up after him. He wasn’t making that up. I can’t help but smile rather foolishly as I climb. He believes in me.
Downstairs, the deadbolt I’d forgotten to lock again thunks shut.
My smile cracks and falls away as I slowly turn to look.
