RoE.d1.day54 – Herrick’s biggest fear
as predicted, he did not thank me for saving him (though saving him did involve throwing him from a train), but if there’s a defining thing about Herrick, it’s his survival instinct. sadly, that definition is often displayed in less than heroic terms, but he has his moments.
right now isn’t one of them, though, as he muscles over some innocent bystanders standing in the way of his escape.
however, this unsavory interaction is adding to some earlier ruminations* which are, i think, bringing Herrick closer and closer to his biggest fear**, which is very exciting. this overall progress of character was there as i plotted out the book, but the actual process of these hints and revelations is happening quite differently than i expected, and far better than i think i could have planned.
at least, that’s how it feels right now.
* ruminations may be rather over-stating the level of thought Herrick actually gives these things, but i’m considering it all relative, for these purposes. this is more thoughtful than he’s been in quite some time, anyway.
** no, i’m not going to tell you what it is. you’ll just have to wait for the book to hit the shelves (he says with willful ignorance as another rejection pops up in his inbox).
