What’s in a (nick)name?
Only about fifteen minutes of writing this morning, but there was a delightful surprise therein: One of the characters gave another character a nickname. It doesn’t really sound like much, I suppose, but the more I think about it, the more positive it feels.*
I didn’t know it was coming, but even more than that**, it feels like a good sign that I’m staying in tune with the characters, which is something I feel I’ve been lacking a bit lately. It’s the kind of thing (if I may be so bold) that makes me marvel at other authors’ abilities when I read stories with characters that act like real, genuine people, with the same real, genuine conversations and actions. It’s obviously something I strive for, but it’s a lot harder than it seems most of the time (at least for me).
Even the small things are great.
* Not the nickname, but the fact that a nickname was given.
** Which is, itself, a great feeling for me whenever it happens.
