Two hours here, two hours there…

So, yesterday afternoon’s writing while our daughter napped (almost 2 hours!!) was some of the best I’ve had in quite some time.

I’ve been trying for a while to ignore a nagging feeling that there was something wrong with one of my children’s stories, hoping that it would just go away.* Fortunately, I finally came to my senses and dove back in, zeroed in on the problem and solved it. Wasn’t easy, though. I really (really, really, really) liked what I had to get rid of, but I had to get rid of it. No question.**

Once that was gone, I was able to discover the proper solution, what really should have been there in the first place. I say ‘in the first place’, because it turns out that the best answer was buried inside one of my earliest drafts. I had just passed it by in light of this other idea which seemed cooler.

Having dug it back out and cleaned it off (and offered my due apologies), it brings the whole story together in a clear, easy, effortless manner.

Amazing how that works, sometimes.

I mean that both in the frustrating ‘why can’t I see this the first time?’ way, and in the truly awe-filled ‘I’m just the vessel’ kind of way. When it works best, I think, it feels most like discovery.

And then there was this morning.

I spent about the same amount of time trying to write a single cover letter for that very story. And I’m still not sure it’s right, either. And by ‘it’, I mean any of the 3+ versions I’ve come up with.

*sigh*

Really not a fan of the business side of things.

Hey! What about “The Devil You Know”? You said you were working on that one (which is so overdue it’s not even funny)! What’s all this other stuff?

Sorry. Yes, you’re right. I did say I was. And I am. Well, not today or yesterday, obviously.

Obviously.

Alright, listen. The day job’s calling, so I have to go, but I’ll explain tomorrow.

* I know, I know. I really do know better, but it was one of those ‘kill your favorites’ situations.

** My reward for doing the proper thing here? Turns out that what I had to cut isn’t wrong in itself, it was just in the wrong story. I’m already working on its proper story, which is going to be very cool, too!
